Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic have officially joined forces in a bid to reshape tourism in the Caribbean.
Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González and Dominican Republic Tourism Minister David Collado have signed a memorandum of understanding that establishes a first-of-its-kind partnership between the two destinations
The idea is to boost multi-destination tourism, improve air connectivity, and create joint initiatives focused on sustainable economic growth.
It’s what Gonzalez called an “historic step” toward a more connected, more resilient Caribbean.
“This agreement reaffirms our commitment to sustainable economic development, the strengthening of our tourism industry, and the well-being of our communities,” she said. “We are betting on a collaborative model that positions Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic as complementary destinations and strategic allies.”
So what are the key pillars?
Improved air connectivity between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, with an eye toward attracting long-haul international travelers.
A Joint destination promotion, including combined vacation packages designed to encourage tourists to visit both islands.
Sustainable tourism development, with a focus on ecosystem preservation and responsible investment.
A shared promotional campaign valued at $2 million, funded equally by both governments, launching this month.
“We’re betting on multi-destination,” Collado said.
Multi-destination tourism, which envisions travelers visiting more than one island on their Caribbean vacations, has long been an ambition of Caribbean destinations.
Of course, the difficulties of intra-regional travel (and high air taxes) have long made that more of a pipe dream.
The hope is that this new push could turn into something tangible for a real tourism shift.
“We’re proving that the ocean between us doesn’t divide us—it connects us,” González said. “And when we work together, we can transform the region.”
