step 2 – embassy/consulate (they literally exist for this)
find nearest one: usembassy.gov → country → emergencies. call/email first if you can. go in ASAP. bring whatever scraps you have:
- birth certificate copy / naturalization proof
- driver’s license or any other ID copy
- passport photo (drugstores/photobooths nearby usually do them cheap)
- flight details if you have a ticket soon
- cash/credit card for fees (~$130–200)
they’ll redo DS-64 + DS-11. urgent travel? they can issue emergency/limited-validity passport—often same or next day, valid just long enough to fly home (7 days to 1 year depending). big cities fast. smaller posts slower. luck of the draw.
